If Hip Hop interests you at all watch this Documentary. It's an hour but it is worth it.
This originally aired on PBS as a part of the Independent Lens series. Byron Hurt set out to talk about violence, gender roles, and homophobia in Hip Hop. Read more about it here.
Here is my take:
This is big. Every kid who likes Hip Hop needs to see this or at least think about these things. To paraphrase my friend Jason it is sad to see any group of men grow up to idealize a stereotype, but it is situation that needs to be explored. The part about major labels controlling the contracts and therefore controlling the types of Artists we all see I found especially troubling. Oh yeah and Chuck D is my hero.
Long Live Intelligent Hip Hop.
